Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice (Philippians 4:4), for the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10).

As we enter 2018, let us be reminded that suffering gives way to joy. Just as the sun rises each day, God will see us through, but we must also look inward to examine our conscience and repent of sins which separate us from the path of holiness.

We must look to the hope that the Lord gives, be ever joyful that the light He brings will drive our darkness away and cast out the shadows of sin.

For sure, there is a joy to be found in our daily lives and in the natural world but these can pass away. Our joy must be rooted in the promise of eternal joy that only Christ can bring. It is as simple as thanking God for our home, family, the beauty of a clear blue sky, etc..

When my son Vincent went home to the Lord 17 years ago, my joy was completely taken away. Although I still loved the Lord, there was emptiness. But I carried on and knew that God would use every pain for His glory.

Many years later, when 4 families lost their loved ones at different times, I was able to comfort them. They received the Lord and one mother re-dedicated her life to God after hearing
my testimony. Her only son passed away, too, and she was angry with God.

In 2 Corinthians 1:4 it says God comforts us in our tribulation so that we may be able to comfort others who go through similar pains. Only He can turn our sadness into joy. In Christ alone, we have eternal joy which turns away sadness, grief and pain. Let us look forward to the coming dawn of Christ.

Be thankful and live each day with the joy of the Lord.
