A Broken Heart

A Broken Heart

Psalm 51:16-17 New International Version (NIV)
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
My sacrifice, O God, is[a] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.

This is a Psalm written by David after Nathan rebuked him after he had taken Bathsheba as his wife.

1) David did evil in the eyes of the Lord but he didn’t realize it. what did he do?

2) He lusted for another woman, another man’s wife.

3) He slept with this woman

4) He tried to manipulate Uriah not once but twice by asking him to go home to sleep with his wife and pretend that Bathsheba got pregnant because of Uriah

5) He finally killed Uriah by using the enemies

David sinned against God by coveting another man’s wife, by telling lies and by manipulating and finally murder.

Yet he did not recognize his sin when Nathan rebuked him.

2 Samuel 12:5
5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over because he did such a thing and had no pity.”

David knew how to judge the rich man for sacrificing the lamb of the poor man but he didn’t see his own evil doings. Only after Nathan reveal it to him did he realize.

What's on the inside

In application, every one of us makes mistakes. Every one of us sins. But greater is the sin of not admitting to our mistake than the sin itself. Also, we need to keep checking our hearts daily so that we don’t fall deeper into sin.

Repent Immediately

1 Peter 5:8

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

How to be alert and sober mind? It’s to be knowing exactly what are doing every day and submitting our actions and thoughts to God. If David had stopped at his first sin of lust and realized he was wrong, maybe he won’t have taken the next step and unfortunately for him, it led to murder and that led to his own son’s death which was not the plan God has for him. If we make one mistake, let us admit to it and repent immediately because we can see the next sin only gets bigger and bigger.

In the end, David realizes this. God delights not in our offerings, great things we can do for him. God delights in our broken heart our broken spirit of knowing when we are wrong and coming to him for forgiveness and healing, acknowledging that we are nothing and that God is everything.

The devil wants us to think that the little initial mistake we made is ok, we are not the sinner. We don’t need to feel bad about it and ask for forgiveness. We can brush it aside if we do other great things for God like serving in the church, working in the church, give money to the poor etc. But all that is our modern day sacrifice and offering that is not important to God, what he wants is only our broken and contrite spirit.

The first step to true repentance and reconciliation with God is agreeing with God about how bad our sin is. True repentance only can lead to our freedom.

Let’s pray.

Father, help us to be on alert every day and recognize the traps of the enemy who is out to devour us. Let us not fall victim to his traps and temptations but check our hearts daily if there are actions and thoughts that are not of God. Help us to humble ourselves to admit our sins and our mistakes so we do not fall further into sin. For Lord, it is not a big sacrifice that you seek, but a broken and contrite heart and spirit.
