It’s always a bit surreal when a personality that you’ve seen on TV shows up in real life. Today, this was what exactly happened, when Jonathan Yabut, the winner of The Apprentice: Asia came to my workplace to give a motivational talk to the staff.

In the many points that he shared, this point stood out the most for me; MISE EN PLACE. In Wikipedia, it is defined as “a French culinary phrase which means “putting in place” or “everything in its place.” It refers to the set up required before cooking and is often used in professional kitchens to refer to organizing and arranging the ingredients.

For example cuts of meat, relishes, sauces, par-cooked items, spices, freshly chopped vegetables, and other components that a cook will require for the menu items that are expected to be prepared during a shift.” All these preparation is of utmost importance BEFORE YOU TURN ON THE FIRE AT THE STOVE TO COOK.

When he said that, my mind immediately thought, “What a great message for the church”. It is always our prayer and desire to see growth, to see the Holy Spirit move mightily in our midst, to see miracles and wonders and all the good things that we see and read in the Bible.

How Are We Doing

It’s always exciting to have these pictures painted before us, to hear speakers giving the growth word to the church, but are we ready to answer this question: ARE WE PREPARED?

Isaiah 40:3 and Mark 1:3 tells us to “prepare the way for the Lord”. That clearly shows that something must be prepared and accomplished in the background before we even dare to welcome the King into our midst. I can think of a few areas where preparation is crucial if we want growth.

After The MM-Party - HMM!
1. In our inner life
We want God to speak to us and to be more present in our life? We have to spend time with Him and in His words. We get told this so often that its effect is lost on us, but that doesn’t negate the truth. And it is still true. The strength of any relationship is equivalent to the amount of effort and time poured into it.

2. In ministry
Can you imagine a surge of 3,000 new people coming into church one day, and everyone accepts the Lord on that day? (Acts 2:14-42) Is the church equipped for such growth?

Think about it; how are we doing follow-ups with the 1 or 2 new person that comes to church every week? Do we continue to keep in touch with them? Do we show genuine care? Remember, that soul was the soul that the Lord gave up His life for. That’s how much He loves them.  Fantastic programs attract people but it is love and acceptance that grows a church.

How about the great music that we hear from other churches via Youtube? Or the great services that we always seem to see at other places? While we aspire to be like them and many times wishes our own backyard to be the same, we tend to forget this fact; all those great things that we see are a direct result of countless hours of PREPARATION.

Believe! at the Burning Man

I will always remember this quote:

It still rings true until today. If we want God to turn on the Holy Spirit fire in our lives, we have to make sure all the ingredients are ready for cooking. How are we preparing ourselves to wait for that outpouring of His works?
