Which Way to Follow?

  • 1 Kings 15:44: He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.

Jeroboam was one of the kings of Israel during the Old Testament. He was an official during Solomon reign and he started off well as a young man who did well in his work which was probably why he was set apart for the throne.

Solomon too started well in his younger years but sadly he too fell and did evil in his final years chasing after pagan women and worshipping their gods.

A prophecy thus came to Jeroboam where God told him that He will give Israel to him out of Solomon’s hands and God promised to bless his reign if he would obey Him.

  • 1 Kings 11:38: “If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right in my eyes by obeying my decrees and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you.

Jeroboam thus had the favour of God and He became king, I believe, it is due to his initial devotion to God at that time. But sadly Jeroboam too did not follow the ways of God after he came to the throne. Instead, he did evil in the eyes of God. A complete turnaround.

This phrase in 1 Kings 15:34 was to be repeated several times subsequently in the Bible. Jeroboam not only came to a sad end, his family too. The so-called enduring dynasty that God had promised could not materialize because Jeroboam did not cooperate with God. He did not choose to walk in God’s ways.

Banished !

Which Way Hence to Follow?

Several kings after Jeroboam chose to follow the ways of Jeroboam, committing the same sins of Jeroboam and causing Israel to sin. The Bible records this fact again and again. Jeroboam has gotten infamous! These kings chose to follow Jeroboam which meant the opposite of God’s ways.

What Kind of Legacy Would you Leave Behind for The Coming Generations?

Jeroboam left a tragic legacy of disobedience and sin. Which way we choose to follow has an impact not only on us but also the generations after us. Hence, we bear a heavy and awesome responsibility to make the right choices now.

Right choices are not just about major decisions in life but also in the daily small decisions we make. Should I drink? Should I give that bribe to get away from a summons? Should I beat the traffic lights? Should I skip my personal devotions?

But how?

Looking into the patterns, it shows that God intended great purposes for us, great destiny and many good plans for us. Yet, many times we fall due to poor choices we make on a small scale which ballooned into a gigantic mess.

The Lord promises He will never forsake us. We can take a moment here and reflect upon where. Take a moment and be still and let Him speak over your life.

Action Steps:

  1. His Words. Dig deep into His words. Take days if not hours to seek the Lord. Let Him deal with your heart. 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”.
  2. Allow His light into every area of darkness in our lives. Every hidden sin, hurts, bitterness, pain can be exposed to His light so that it can no longer have its grip on you. One of the ways is to reveal your situation to a person/friend/leader/mentor/family member that you can trust.
John 1:5: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
  3. Surrender your situation unto His hands. In faith ask of the Lord for a person that can be an accountability partner for your situation.
  4. Fast and pray for clarity and confirmation. Approach this person after you have peace. Begin your journey of recovery with this person or your church’s community.

With the action steps above I believe you will be on the way towards a healthy and vibrant relationship with God!!
