He Calls Us by Name

He Calls Us by Name

Have you ever felt you do not belong, left out, like a sore thumb in midst of everything that is going on? It seems like everyone belonged and knows exactly what they are doing.

Not me.

Most of the time in my life, I feel like going home in the midst of people and long to have company when I am alone. A trillions of strategies and analysis will have their picnic in my mind for weeks before I take actions but only to meet with the wall – FEAR of rejection, when I about to step out.

If you are familiar with this feeling, your identity is most likely under attack.

The Fruit of Rejection

One way or another, we meet face to face with rejections which is pretty common. However, unattended wounds will deepen the perspective of rejection instead of freedom.

The Lord promises us, freedom in Him. This freedom doesn’t exempt us from pain, rejection, hurts or brokenness but freedom in Him gives us the strength to face the giants, head on.

The Freedom – Identity

Is knowing who you are. Do you know who you are?

Isaiah 43:1 “But now, this is what the LORD says– he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

He calls you by name and what does that mean to us. I asked the Lord what does this really mean? Everyone calls my name. Everyone knows my name.

I am, most terrified when people call me in my full name – confirm in trouble.

What is the difference then? When God Himself calls us by name?

He Calls You by Name

When I was in Cambodia for the mission trip with the #dreamteam (shoutout to fellow mates!) our Cambodian neighbour’s dog have few little puppies. One particular wasn’t favoured by its mother. Whenever it is meal time, the mother will growl at him, but allow other puppies to eat.

This little one doesn’t give up and is extremely smart. He will distance himself from the mother and bullying siblings and wait for us to wash our dishes to get first handed leftover food. He caught my attention because of his grittiness. I began to single out food for him to eat first, chase away his siblings and mother so that he can eat peacefully.

In no time, everyone starts to favour him as well. Feed him plenty of food, bathe him, even start playing with him. The kind of attention none of his siblings gets to enjoy. Then, I gave him a name, Puppers.

There were at least 13 of us know his name and start calling him Puppers. Surely he responds. But it is when I call him Puppers, he will run towards me from 20 metres away. As he was running towards me, he does not respond to any other people that call after his name, as if he knows I am the one that is calling him, he knows my voice and filters out every other voice. Only run towards me directly.

And there He whispered to my heart,

“This is what delights me. When I call you, you know who I AM, You know you are mine. You are not affected by other voices that call your name”

Our Father, Our God

We all identified ourselves with Puppers don’t we? The fact is, we encounter rejections as part and parcel of life whether in the social circle, family or even the one you love most. So what is the remedy, really?

As Puppers persevere in his suffering to survive, let us make the same choice to persevere. The good news is we are different. Because we have a God to turn to. A God that collect and count our tears.

When I was deeply hurt, I ran to Him with my load. I did not pretend I wasn’t hurt. In fact, I cried my heart out, I tell Him how I feel when I was rejected by people I care about and how the world seems to be so unfair.

When you know you are loved, favoured by God, you can lean on this love to keep going. Braving the storms ahead, just resting in His faithfulness. Knowing and trusting He can turn mourning into joy.

It doesn’t matter if the world is against you, when He shows up, doors will open, the opportunity will come, the right friends and person will surround you, you’ll receive favours simply because He favours you.

Just like I favour Puppers.

You are a Child of God

Thing is, where are you running towards? Are you listening to all the voices that are attacking your identity?

“you cant”

“you’re never enough”

“you’re fat”

“you’re thin”

“you’re too young”

“you’re too old”

“you dont matter”

Reject every one of those lies and start embracing the truth about yourself.

You are loved, so loved that the Father gave His only Son for your sake. You are more precious than many sparrows, you are redeemed by Jesus that loves you before time. He wrote your life in His book.

An Invitation to His Heart

His voice affirms who you are. Like Puppers, single out other noises and run towards your Father. People may call you by your name but they don’t know you. They call you with their own perspective, understanding or even prejudice about you. But your God knows you by heart.

Only He calls your name in love, seeing you as His beloved.

John 10:27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Happy bench Monday!

Let Him affirm our identity today. We don’t need to be more or less. Just be us, meet God at where we are. Sure we need to improve but that is a result of worshipping our God first.

When we allow God to love us in our flaws and weakness, it will compel us to love others the same way, in their flaws and weakness.

Father, we thank You for loving us. For even creating us, knowing how far we can hurt You. Lord, we come before You to repent of the lies we believe about ourselves. In Jesus name we nullified, cancel and rebuke every false identity that has latched on us. Refresh us today Lord in Your Spirit. Fill us with Your truth. Give us the thirst to seek You.

Reveal to us, what You see in us. Speak life, joy, peace, love and hope into us today. We receive Your love, in Jesus name. We say YES to what You say about us. We choose to believe in You, that we are able to do greater things through You.

We choose to call our brothers and sisters in their name, the way you call them. We choose to speak life into their lives. We choose to always protect, always trust, always hope and always persevere in our love for our brothers and sisters. In Jesus name, Amen.

John 14:27 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

1 Corinthians 13:4- 7 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hope, always perseveres.
